This video was filmed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in Malta while people were self-isolating at home. CarNerd TV founder Mark Debono talks about his ’91 Toyota MR2, a 29-year-old mid-engine Japanese hero and the car that started everything for him, including launching this site. Get ready to turn back the clock to a time when suits were baggy, grunge ruled the airwaves, and cars were pure (and had pop-up headlights).

Actually, Mark never intended to buy a Toyota MR2. He says he remembers the car’s distinct appearance from his childhood, even though it wasn’t a common sight on Maltese roads. This particular model belonged to one of his best friends for 17 years; when the friend decided to put it up for sale, Mark had the opportunity to take it for a test-drive, and after 10 minutes behind the wheel, he knew he had to buy it himself.

In this video, Mark goes over the car’s ancestry and shares several old commercials from the 90s that feature the MR2. In his words, “owning your dream car has its pitfalls because you learn about the things you dislike about it” and he lists the pros and cons of owning an MR2, most of which can be generalised to models from the same era. Ultimately, nothing can beat the reason why Mark bought it in the first place: as a reminder of childhood and a throwback to a time when sports cars were simpler, more attainable and purer.

Mark runs a digital marketing agency, which is as far as you can get from nerding out on cars. That hasn’t stopped him from spending afternoons underneath cars pretending to know what he’s doing, before calling a knowledgeable friend. He doesn’t understand SUVs, and will try convince you, unsuccessfully, that you’re better off with a fast wagon.
